MARPOL 73/78 is the main International Convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes and contains Annexes related to different kinds of pollution. Annex I requires that ships over 400 gross tonnage and oil tankers over 150 GT carry a Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP) and that this should be approved by the relevant national administration.
As a part of this contingency planning, vessels under 400’ require a 7 barrel (1100L) Marine Spill Kit.
